Understanding the cycle and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by a cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted, recurring thoughts, images, or urges that cause intense distress or anxiety. Compulsions are physical or mental behaviors performed to alleviate the fear or anxiety triggered by these obsessions. While compulsions may provide temporary relief, they often reinforce the cycle by teaching the brain that the ritual is necessary.

Misconceptions often minimize the severity of the disorder, treating it as a personality quirk rather than a condition that can cause significant psychological and physical distress. Effective treatment includes Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy. ERP is a behavioral approach that helps individuals gradually face triggers through exposure while learning to resist performing compulsions, thereby interrupting the cycle of the disorder.
