Understanding Trauma-Informed Care and EMDR Therapy
Trauma is a significant underlying factor in many mental health and substance use disorders, often impacting how individuals think, feel, and respond to daily life. Addressing unresolved trauma is considered a critical component of the recovery process.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro. It utilizes bilateral stimulation—such as side-to-side eye movements or rhythmic hand taps—to help the brain reprocess distressing memories. This method aims to reduce the emotional impact of traumatic events without requiring the patient to relive them fully.
In addiction treatment, it is important to distinguish between trauma-informed care and trauma-focused therapy. Trauma-informed care refers to a program-wide approach that prioritizes safety, trust, and peer support to prevent re-traumatization. In contrast, trauma-focused therapy, such as EMDR, involves specific clinical interventions designed to help individuals process traumatic memories and treat conditions like PTSD.
