Underwater archaeological discoveries made off Tamil Nadu coast

Archaeological expeditions off the coast of Tamil Nadu, India, have yielded significant underwater discoveries. A joint mission between the Scientific Exploration Society and India’s National Institute of Oceanography, involving 25 divers, identified an extensive area of man-made structures at depths of 5 to 7 meters near Mahabalipuram. These findings align with local legends regarding submerged cities and historical accounts of the Seven Pagodas.

In a separate but related effort, the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology recently concluded a phase of exploration off the Poompuhar coast. This phase uncovered several artifacts, including glazed ceramic fragments, limestone idol bases, and ancient ring wells. Notably, researchers recovered a fragment of a torpedo jar believed to have originated in West Asia, suggesting historical maritime trade connections. Due to monsoon conditions, the department plans to resume underwater investigations in January 2027.
