Corfu’s Himelia Beach Underwater Litter Revealed in New Photos

Photographer George Kontarinis of the Eurokinissi agency released a new underwater photo series showing abandoned sun‑beds, metal debris and other waste on the seabed of Himelia beach on the north coast of Corfu, Greece. The images document a worsening situation compared with a similar report a year earlier, when the photographer highlighted discarded umbrella bases in the same area. Kontarinis warned that “the sea floor continues to hide unpleasant images,” calling the footage a reminder that protecting the marine environment is a collective responsibility.

The visual evidence has sparked renewed public concern about the impact of litter on a coastal ecosystem noted for its natural beauty, and it underscores calls for more effective monitoring, clean‑up actions and responsible management of beach equipment.
