Undiagnosed CKD increases cardiovascular risk in heart failure patients
A secondary analysis of the FINEARTS-HF trial, published in JAMA Cardiology, has found that undiagnosed chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular death and heart failure events in patients with heart failure.
The study, involving researchers such as John W. Ostrominski from Brigham and Women's Hospital, focused on patients with heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) or preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Notably, the results indicated that the non-steroidal selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, finerenone, showed consistent effectiveness in improving heart failure outcomes regardless of whether the patient had CKD.
