Undocumented Driver Charged in Crash Killing Connecticut Officer and Girlfriend

Melissa Ramirez, a 27‑year‑old undocumented immigrant, was arrested after her Jeep collided head‑on with a Harley‑Davidson motorcycle on Sugar Hollow Road in Danbury, Connecticut, at about 2:45 a.m. on July 13. The motorcycle was being ridden by off‑duty Bridgeport Police Officer Cooper Whiteside, 38, and his 34‑year‑old girlfriend Brittany Anne Islami. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reports show Ramirez had a blood‑alcohol level of 0.14, nearly twice the legal limit, and tested positive for cannabis. She was traveling 63 mph in a 45‑mph zone. Ramirez has been charged with two counts of second‑degree manslaughter, illegal operation of a vehicle while under the influence, reckless speed, and failure to stay in her lane. At a hearing, Judge Seán McGuinness reduced her bond from $500,000 to $300,000 and noted an existing immigration detainer.
