UNDOF removes unexploded ordnance in Syria’s Quneitra

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has launched operations to remove war remnants and unexploded ordnance in several areas of Syria’s Quneitra province. These efforts aim to mitigate the significant risks posed to civilians by unexploded weapons left behind by previous conflicts.

According to Landmine Monitor data, unexploded ordnance in Syria has caused more than 13,000 deaths and injuries since 2011. The clearance operations occur during Syria’s political transition following the departure of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 and the subsequent formation of a transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa in January 2025.

UNDOF was originally established by a 1974 UN Security Council resolution to monitor the disengagement agreement between Syria and Israel in the Golan Heights.
