UNDP warns 800 million youth face job shortages in developing economies
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has issued a warning regarding a massive employment gap in developing economies. Over the next 15 years, approximately 1.2 billion young people are expected to enter the labor market, yet projections suggest only 400 million jobs will be created. This leaves an estimated 800 million young people facing a future without employment.
To address this crisis, the UNDP has launched two major initiatives during the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Bangkok. The first, the Investment Accelerator, aims to assist governments in improving investment policies, legal frameworks, and moving projects from preparation to implementation. The second, the Jobs for Prosperity Facility, focuses on identifying sectors with high job-creation potential and aligning workforce skills with employer requirements.
UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo noted that while technology and demographics drive these challenges, active labor policies in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and care can mitigate the impact. These initiatives are supported by partnerships with the World Bank Group, the European Investment Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
