UNECE approves new LED headlight replacement categories
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is implementing a phased approach to allow LED replacements in vehicles originally designed for halogen bulbs. In March 2026, the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations approved new LED replacement categories, specifically including H8, H16, and HB4.
These regulations aim to provide legal alternatives for millions of older vehicles. To prevent blinding oncoming drivers, the approved LED replacements must meet strict homologation requirements. These standards dictate specific parameters for light beam distribution, brightness, color, and the boundaries between light and shadow to ensure they function as true equivalents to traditional halogen bulbs.
