UNED delays scholarship results amid budget uncertainty

UNED Costa Rica university budget socioeconomic scholarships higher education funding

The Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED) has postponed the publication of its 2027 socioeconomic scholarship results. The institution stated that the announcement is pending the Legislative Assembly's decision regarding the budget for public universities, which is essential for determining available student support resources.

UNED Rector Rodrigo Arias warned that proposed budget cuts could drastically reduce the number of new students the university can admit in 2027. Currently, the institution enrolls between 10,000 and 11,000 new students per period, but Arias cautioned that enrollment could drop to less than half if the reductions are implemented. The potential cuts could also impact the university's 40 regional campuses due to proposed changes to laws intended to strengthen regional sites.

Separately, the Unitary Union of the Universidad Estatal a Distancia (SIUNED) marked its third anniversary by issuing a statement regarding labor stability and the ongoing budgetary crisis. The union, which has 950 members, criticized recent salary reforms and the deterioration of working conditions compared to other public universities.
