Balkan economic trends show varying GDP, employment, and fiscal results

Economic indicators across the Balkan region show varying trends in employment, GDP, and fiscal health. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, unemployment decreased in Republika Srpska and Brčko District but rose in the Federation of BiH. Total registered unemployed persons reached 311,107 by the end of August, while domestic credit rose to 31.43 billion KM.

In Serbia, real GDP grew by approximately 3.6 percent in the first eight months of 2026, driven by services and trade, though industrial production showed slight stagnation. However, fiscal concerns persist as reports indicate a significant budget deficit, with some estimates suggesting a September deficit of approximately 903 million euros due to rising expenditures.

Croatia reported a 9.5 percent increase in exports during the first eight months of 2026, reaching 17.85 billion euros, which helped reduce the trade deficit to 13.3 billion euros. Meanwhile, the Croatian government announced a budget rebalance to increase spending on pensions, healthcare, and education while maintaining a deficit of 2.9 percent of GDP.

In Montenegro, tax revenues rose by 9.7 percent in the first nine months of 2026. Additionally, Mastercard announced that starting in 2027, it will introduce offline card payment support across Europe, including Montenegro, to allow transactions up to 200 euros during network outages.
