Piraeus Bank reaches 5 billion euros in sustainable financing
Piraeus Bank CEO Christos Megalos announced that the bank's sustainable finance portfolio has reached 5 billion euros. Speaking at the UNEP FI Mediterranean Forum 2026 in Athens, Megalos emphasized that sustainability is an integral part of the bank's strategy, influencing risk assessment, capital allocation, and client collaboration.
The forum, co-organized by Piraeus Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), brought together financial institutions, investors, and experts to discuss the transition of the Mediterranean economy toward sustainability, resilience, and competitiveness. Discussions focused on addressing climate, environmental, and socio-economic challenges through sustainable financing and innovation.
Megalos highlighted the necessity of prioritizing profitable, resilient, and sustainable investment projects that create long-term value. He noted that the challenge for the banking sector is to identify and fund such projects within the next three to four years to achieve measurable impacts. He also warned that geopolitical conflicts, supply chain disruptions, and environmental phenomena are increasingly transforming climate and physical risks into direct economic risks for the Mediterranean region.
