The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report titled ‘Limiting Overshoot’, warning that global temperatures are set to exceed the 1.5°C threshold established by the Paris Agreement within the next few years.

Under the most optimistic scenario, warming is projected to peak at 1.8°C, provided that current national commitments are met. However, current global policies suggest a trajectory toward 2.6°C of warming by 2100. The report shifts the international focus from merely trying to avoid the 1.5°C limit to managing an ‘overshoot, peak, and decline’ pathway.

To mitigate the most severe consequences, UNEP emphasizes the need for immediate and drastic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane, alongside the large-scale deployment of carbon dioxide removal technologies and reforestation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen warned that while the overshoot is unavoidable, the duration and magnitude of the temperature breach must be minimized to prevent irreversible damage to ecosystems, food security, and coastal regions.
