UNEP warns of 1.5°C warming limit risk amid US data center deregulation concerns

A new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that the Earth is nearing the 1.5°C warming limit established by the Paris Agreement. The study, released in Nairobi, indicates that exceeding this threshold could lead to irreversible damage, including the loss of coral reefs, severe heatwaves, and rising sea levels threatening coastal regions.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate end to fossil fuel use to control methane emissions and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. The report emphasizes that rapid global action is still possible to avoid the most catastrophic outcomes.

In the United States, officials and former administrators are raising concerns regarding the environmental impact of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Critics, including members of the Environmental Protection Network, argue that efforts to fast-track AI data center construction through deregulation are weakening environmental protections. They claim that recent federal actions have prioritized industry growth over public health, potentially increasing pollution from energy sources used to power these facilities.
