UNESCO adds new World Heritage sites for 2026

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has added 25 new sites to its list for 2026. Among the notable additions are several locations of significant historical, cultural, and natural value.

In France, the Normandy Coast has been recognized for its connection to the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. The site includes key areas such as Utah and Omaha beaches, Pointe du Hoc, and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer.

Greece has added Mount Olympus, celebrated for its mythological importance as the home of the gods and its diverse Mediterranean biodiversity. In the United States, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge has been included as a significant subtropical freshwater peatland.

In Brazil, the Amazonian theatres, specifically the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus and the Teatro da Paz in Belém, have been recognized. Built during the rubber boom era, these 19th-century structures blend European classical models with Amazonian decorative motifs.
