UNESCO celebrates first International Day of Caves and Karst in Italy

September 13 marks the first UNESCO-established International Day of Caves and Karst, an annual event dedicated to highlighting the importance of subterranean natural heritage.

In Sicily, the Man and Karst 2026 conference is being held from September 13 to 19. Organized by the Centro Ibleo di Ricerche Speleo-Idrogeologiche (CIRS ETS), the event brings together researchers, geologists, and archaeologists to study and protect karst landscapes. The program includes scientific sessions at the Vendicari Nature Reserve and a guided scientific visit to the Grotta Monello, a protected site in the Syracuse area known for its geological and biological value.

In Palermo, celebrations include the “Tutti in grotta appassionatamente” initiative at the Grotta della Molara Nature Reserve. Organized by the Gruppi Ricerca Ecologia Sicilia and the Le Taddarite association, the event aims to educate the public on how underground water systems and karst landscapes provide vital resources, including drinking water for over one billion people, and preserve unique biodiversity.
