UNESCO Inscribes Central Italy’s Condominium Theatres as World Heritage

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting for its 48th session in Busan, South Korea (19‑29 July 2026), formally added the system of Italian condominium theatres of the 18th‑19th centuries to the World Heritage List. The serial nomination comprises ten historic theatres spread across the Marche, Umbria and Emilia‑Romagna regions, including the Teatro Angelo Mariani in Sant’Agata Felseria and the Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi.

Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli welcomed the decision, emphasizing the theatres’ role as community‑owned cultural hubs for centuries. He noted the inscription raises the total of Italian sites on the list to 62, reinforcing Italy’s leading position. The initiative, promoted by Marche Region President Francesco Acquaroli in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, will support the preservation and promotion of these venues.

The recognition highlights the unique Italian model of shared‑ownership theatres that enabled broader public access to opera and live performance, contributing to local identity and social cohesion.
