Alamut Castle Complex Inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List
The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, convened in Busan, South Korea, approved the nomination of the Alamut Castle complex and its associated fortifications. The inscription covers seven historic castles—Alamut, Lambsar, Novizerşah, Şemskelaye, Kestinlar, Şirkuh and İlan—located in the Alamut region north of Tehran. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, the network exemplifies advanced defensive architecture, water‑resource management and communication routes, and was also a noted scientific centre linked to the scholar Nasir al‑Din al‑Tusi. Iran’s president, Mesud Pezeşkiyan, highlighted the cultural significance of the listing, noting that it reinforces national unity. With this addition, Iran’s tally of UNESCO World Heritage sites rose to thirty.
The designation is expected to boost tourism, support local economies and enhance protection of the historic structures.
