UNESCO recognizes CJID for contributions to Nigeria’s AI ecosystem

UNESCO has recognized the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) as a key contributor to Nigeria’s artificial intelligence ecosystem. The recognition appears in UNESCO’s 2026 Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Report for Nigeria, which evaluates the nation's preparedness regarding the development, adoption, and governance of AI.

UNESCO identified CJID in two specific categories: AI Literacy and Inclusion, alongside CoDiCI, and Public Awareness and Advocacy. The report highlights CJID’s efforts to promote participation in AI ecosystems and raise awareness regarding the social implications of the technology through media and education.

CJID, which is a member of the Nigeria AI Collective, coordinates a community of practice with over 600 members. The organization has also provided AI advocacy grants to seven Nigerian civil society organizations, including TechHer, the Cedar Foundation for Disability, and the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL), to support digital inclusion and responsible technology adoption.
