UNESCO recognizes Mexico for literacy progress in Chiapas

UNESCO has recognized Mexico for its significant progress in literacy, specifically highlighting the “Chiapas Puede” program. The initiative has successfully taught more than 160,000 indigenous women in the state of Chiapas how to read and write.

During the 2026 International Literacy Day celebrations, UNESCO officials noted that Mexico’s efforts contribute to broader rights such as gender equity, health, and economic autonomy. The recognition was presented alongside Mexican officials, including the Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado, and Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar.
