UNESCO warns of border wall impact on Sonoran Desert biodiversity

UNESCO has issued an alert regarding the environmental impact of the border wall construction on the Sonoran Desert. The project threatens the El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve in northwest Sonora, Mexico, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013. The region is critical for biodiversity, housing over 40 mammal species, 200 bird species, and 40 reptile species, including endangered animals like the Sonoran pronghorn and bighorn sheep. The area also holds significant cultural importance for the Tohono O’odham people.

In separate news, the French Catholic Church has increased attendance forecasts for the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled from September 25 to 28. Following high turnout during the Pope’s recent trip to Spain, organizers now expect approximately one million people to participate in events across Paris, Saint-Denis, Lourdes, and Metz. Due to high registration numbers, the planned mass in Paris has been moved to the Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde to accommodate the crowds.
