UNGA President labels Rohingya crisis a “grave human crisis”
Dr. Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, has characterized the Rohingya crisis as a “grave human crisis.” In an interview with UN News, Rahman emphasized that violence is not a solution to the conflict, stating, “Violence will not solve any problem. It will only defer it and make it worse.” He highlighted the destruction of villages and the mass displacement of the Rohingya people from Myanmar.
Rahman noted the resilience of the refugees, recalling a visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Cox’s Bazar where refugees expressed a strong desire to return home. Bangladesh currently hosts over 1.3 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char Island.
Ahead of a high-level side event scheduled for September 23, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to address the General Assembly to seek renewed international cooperation and attention toward resolving the protracted crisis. Bangladesh continues to advocate for conditions that would allow refugees to return to Myanmar safely, voluntarily, and with dignity.
