Ungheni District Hospital to receive Japanese grant for surgical microscope

Ungheni District Hospital in Moldova will receive a modern ophthalmological surgical microscope through a grant of over $65,000 provided by the Government of Japan. The funding is part of the “Kusanone” Grant Program for Human Security.

The new equipment is intended to replace outdated technology, as hospital officials noted that previous instruments no longer met modern medical standards for safe surgical interventions. The upgrade is expected to increase the number of surgical procedures by approximately 40%, allowing doctors to perform high-precision and complex eye surgeries locally rather than referring patients elsewhere.

The grant agreement was signed by Japanese diplomatic representatives and Elvira Stati, the director of the hospital. The Japanese government has been a long-term partner in Moldova's health sector, having provided a total of $8 million across 97 projects in health, education, and public utilities since 2008.
