UNHCR High Commissioner visits Venezuela to discuss migrant return and earthquake recovery

UNHCR High Commissioner Barham Salih concluded a two-day official visit to Venezuela, marking the first time a high commissioner has visited the country. During the visit, Salih met with interim President Delcy Rodríguez and other high-ranking officials to establish a roadmap for humanitarian cooperation and protection.

A primary focus of the discussions was the voluntary return and socio-economic reintegration of the approximately 6.9 million Venezuelans who have emigrated in recent years. Salih expressed confidence that the ongoing political transition could create the necessary security and stability for citizens to return home with dignity and peace.

Additionally, the agenda addressed the devastating impact of the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. The seismic events, which included magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in over 6,500 deaths and left thousands displaced. Salih visited the heavily affected state of La Guaira to evaluate reconstruction needs, warning that the recovery process will be a long-term challenge due to the massive scale of material and human loss.
