UNHCR praises Mexico’s legal framework for refugee protection

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Barham Salih, commended Mexico for establishing a robust legal framework for asylum and refugee protection during a solemn session at the Mexican Senate. The visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.

Salih highlighted Mexico’s successful integration programs, which allow displaced individuals to access labor markets and rebuild their lives. He noted that while asylum systems face intense international pressure, Mexico’s legal structures and integration efforts provide significant opportunities for refugees to establish themselves within the country.

In response, the Mexican Senate committed to three primary actions: reviewing and strengthening the Law on Refugees, Complementary Protection, and Political Asylum; supporting the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) and relevant institutions; and ensuring that legislative mandates are backed by sufficient institutional capacity. Senate leadership emphasized that future solutions must be based on human dignity, international law, and shared responsibility.
