Malaysia to repatriate 1,476 Myanmar nationals in September
Malaysia is set to begin the first phase of a voluntary repatriation program on September 29, returning 1,476 Myanmar nationals to their home country. The group will be transported via two Myanmar navy warships and a hospital ship. This initial phase is part of a broader agreement where Myanmar has consented to receive approximately 5,000 individuals, including members of the Rohingya ethnic group.
To manage the long-standing refugee issue, the Malaysian government is also introducing a new Refugee Registration Document system. This system will replace the previous registration managed by the UN refugee agency, providing Malaysian authorities with direct access to biometric information and registration data for both detainees and undocumented migrants.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has stated it is not involved in this repatriation plan. The agency warned that ongoing armed conflict and violence within Myanmar mean that conditions are currently unsafe for a return that is safe, dignified, and sustainable. While Malaysian officials maintain the process is entirely voluntary, the UNHCR emphasized that any return must be based on informed decisions and that protection risks must be assessed beforehand.
