Unhealthy Foods and Alcohol Drive Rising Liver Damage and Cirrhosis

Regular consumption of foods high in hidden fats, saturated oils, trans fats, and added sugars – such as fried potatoes, burgers, pizza, chips, biscuits and other processed snacks – overloads the liver. Over time the organ develops chronic inflammation, replaces healthy cells with fibrous tissue, and can progress to fatty liver disease (MASLD), fibrosis and ultimately cirrhosis.

Experts cite excessive alcohol intake as a parallel risk, noting that even occasional binge drinking can cause toxic damage. Recommended limits are up to one standard drink per day for women and two for men, with complete abstinence advised for anyone with existing health problems.

To reduce risk, doctors advise swapping fried fast‑food items for sources of healthy fats like avocado, olive oil and nuts, and choosing fresh fruit, vegetables and hummus instead of salty, sugary packaged snacks. Controlling sugar intake also helps prevent the liver from converting excess glucose into harmful lipids, lowering the chances of type‑2 diabetes and liver disease.
