UNICA medical students protest over potential loss of EsSalud internship

Medical students from the Daniel Alcides Carrión Faculty at the Universidad Nacional San Luis Gonzaga (UNICA) protested in front of the university rectorate to demand the renewal of a framework agreement with EsSalud.

Students claim that the lack of an updated agreement prevents them from participating in the 2026 medical internship examination process. They noted that while over 40 other medical faculties are included in the call, UNICA is currently excluded. The students suggested the issue stems from an alleged debt of S/ 94,000 owed by the university to EsSalud, noting that the entity set a deadline in early October to regularize the situation.

During the demonstration, police used riot gear to clear protesters from the roadway. Students also criticized local deputy Verónica Yonz for leaving the premises without addressing their concerns, despite having previously been chosen as a godmother for one of the graduating classes.
