Unicamp researchers identify new synthetic drugs in São Paulo

Researchers at Unicamp’s Toxicological Information Center (CIATox) have identified two new synthetic psychoactive substances, DCK (deschloroketamine) and 2-FDCK (2-fluorodeschloroketamine), for the first time in human saliva samples. The discovery occurred during analyses of individuals attending parties in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

The compounds share a chemical structure similar to ketamine, a medical anesthetic often misused for its dissociative effects. CIATox researchers confirmed that these substances are not metabolites produced by the body from ketamine consumption, but were primary components present in the illicit materials consumed.

The findings raise concerns regarding drug adulteration. In several cases, users reported consuming substances commonly known as ‘bala’ or ‘MD’ (associated with MDMA), yet tests revealed the presence of DCK or 2-FDCK. This suggests these new compounds may be mixed into existing illegal products to reduce costs or enhance effects.
