Unicef calls for urgent action to end child marriage in Bangladesh

Unicef has reported that 47.2% of women in Bangladesh aged 20 to 24 were married before the age of 18, with 13.4% married before age 15. These findings, based on the Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2025, highlight significant risks to girls' education, health, and future prospects.

During a visit to the country, Unicef Executive Director Catherine Russell called for immediate measures to end child marriage and ensure girls remain in school. She emphasized the need for the government to fulfill its commitment to invest 5% of the gross domestic product (GDP) into education and healthcare.

Russell also highlighted the necessity of providing quality education and protection for Rohingya refugee children and those in host communities. The agency warned that child marriage increases the likelihood of school dropouts and early pregnancy, ultimately limiting long-term opportunities for women.
