International Day of the Girl Child calls for end to child marriage

The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, serves as a global platform to advocate for girls' rights and empowerment. The 2026 theme, “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” highlights the urgent need to address systemic challenges such as early marriage, gender-based violence, and educational barriers.

In Ghana, ActionAid has called for increased investment in girls' leadership and stronger accountability to prevent school-related abuse. Similarly, in Nigeria, advocates emphasize the need for uniform enforcement of minimum marriage ages and improved registration systems. In Peru, the focus remains on the specific vulnerabilities of rural girls facing poverty and climate change impacts.

Global reports indicate that approximately 12 million girls are married before adulthood each year. In Iran, economic instability and poverty are cited as major drivers for child labor and forced school dropouts. Despite these challenges, the day also celebrates the agency of young women, including environmental activists in Gaza and Tuvalu who are leading community-based solutions.
