UNICEF partners with Sierra Leone and Ghana on child protection
UNICEF is working with various governments to enhance child protection and social welfare through data utilization and targeted interventions in Sierra Leone and Ghana.
In Sierra Leone, UNICEF Representative Mariko Kagoshima has called for the findings of the 2025-26 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) to be converted into actionable policies and investments. Following a data interpretation workshop involving government institutions and Statistics Sierra Leone, officials emphasized that the survey data will serve as a foundation for national planning, budgeting, and programming to improve the lives of women and children.
In Ghana, the government and UNICEF are collaborating to combat child marriage and teenage pregnancy. During meetings at the United Nations General Assembly, Ghana’s Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, discussed strengthening birth registration and social protection systems. A key component of these efforts is the Livelihood Empowerment and Productive Inclusion Programme (LEPIP), which provides social protection, financial inclusion, and life skills to vulnerable adolescent girls and young mothers aged 16 to 21.
