UNICEF Report Flags Ultra‑Processed Food Intake in Argentine Children
A UNICEF report warns that more than 35% of the daily calories consumed by Argentine children come from sweets, snacks, cookies and sugary drinks such as Coca‑Cola and Pepsi. Fruit and vegetable intake reaches only about 20% of recommended levels, contributing to rising childhood obesity and increasing the risk of type‑2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Health experts advise gradual changes rather than bans: incorporate vegetables in every meal, keep washed fruit visible, prepare home‑made school lunches, share family meals without screens, and model healthier eating habits. In the United States, ultra‑processed foods account for over half of adult energy intake and are linked to obesity, cancer and diabetes. Simple home‑made alternatives—like fruit‑based ice cream or homemade sauces—can help reduce reliance on these products.
