Unicef report: 20 million children face digital sexual abuse annually
A new Unicef report, ‘Through Children’s Eyes: How Digital Technologies Enable Child Sexual Abuse’, reveals that an estimated 20 million children and adolescents across 21 countries experienced technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse within a single year. The findings indicate that approximately 15 million children were exposed to unwanted sexual content, 9 million were coerced into sexual conversations or sharing images, and 4 million had their sexual images leaked without consent.
Social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and WhatsApp, account for roughly 60% of reported violations, while online gaming environments represent 14%. Notably, the report challenges the perception that abusers are primarily strangers; 57% of reported cases involved individuals known to the victim, such as family members, friends, or partners. Additionally, 38% of victims met their aggressors for the first time online.
Experts warn the true scale of the issue may be higher due to significant underreporting. More than 40% of incidents go unreported because victims often do not know how to seek help or where to turn. The research also highlights the rising threat of AI-generated deepfakes, with an estimated 1.2 million children in 11 countries affected by sexually explicit manipulated images.
