UNICEF reports escalation of violence against children in West Bank

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Hannan Sulieman has reported a severe escalation of violence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. During a United Nations Security Council meeting, Sulieman highlighted that between January 2024 and late July 2024, the UN verified the deaths of 174 Palestinian children in the region, averaging more than one child per week. Additionally, over 1,500 children were injured, with nearly half of those victims struck by live ammunition.

Sulieman also noted that three Israeli children were killed and 15 were injured during the same period. The report emphasizes an increase in settler violence, documenting incidents where children were shot, beaten, stabbed, or sprayed with pepper spray. These actions have also targeted homes, livelihoods, and water infrastructure.

The Deputy Executive Director warned of the long-term consequences for survivors, including permanent disabilities, psychological trauma, and disruptions to education. Sulieman noted that accountability for these violations remains extremely rare.
