Unicorn CEOs warn Portuguese entrepreneurs against domestic market focus
At the Game Changers Forum in Lisbon, CEOs of established unicorn companies warned Portuguese entrepreneurs against the 'fantasy' of focusing solely on the domestic market to achieve massive scale.
Diogo Mónica, CEO of Anchorage Digital, stated that entrepreneurs aiming to build international unicorns must target major global markets from the outset. He argued that there are few successful exceptions of large companies that began by focusing only on their national market.
Ricardo Mendes, CEO of Tekever, echoed these sentiments, noting that no company can achieve significant international success if it prepares primarily for its domestic market. Mendes specifically highlighted the security and defense sector as being particularly challenging due to the resistant nature of its institutional and governmental clients.
