UniCredit denies rumors of interest in Banco BPM

UniCredit has dismissed rumors regarding a potential takeover of Banco BPM, labeling reports of interest in the institution as ‘infondate’ (unfounded). While the bank is not pursuing a direct acquisition of the lender led by Giuseppe Castagna, UniCredit indicated it remains an observer of the banking sector's consolidation and may consider acquiring specific branches or assets released during other merger and acquisition processes to satisfy antitrust requirements.

Banco BPM remains a central figure in Italian banking speculation. Following an offer from MPS, the bank is currently operating under certain constraints. CEO Giuseppe Castagna has emphasized the bank's value, noting a 1,500% increase in value over the last five years and a market capitalization of nearly 25 billion euros. Management has expressed a preference for maintaining a strong independent position or potentially partnering with entities such as Crédit Agricole Italia.

In a separate context, Banco BPM leadership has emphasized the bank's commitment to its regional identity in Lombardy and Milan, focusing on its role as a partner to local families and small-to-medium enterprises through community engagement and sports sponsorship.
