UniCredit pushes Commerzbank takeover and launches Europe‑wide IT partnership with Accenture and IBM
Italian bank UniCredit, which already controls about 44.4% of German lender Commerzbank, announced that it is moving forward with a full acquisition. The deal is expected to generate roughly €1.2 billion in pre‑tax synergies and would eventually see Commerzbank merged with UniCredit’s subsidiary HypoVereinsbank after a minimum two‑year period of legal independence. The German government, which retains a 12% stake in Commerzbank, and employee representatives have been consulted, and European Central Bank approval is sought before the end of 2026.
At the same time UniCredit revealed a strategic partnership with Accenture and IBM to modernise its technology platform across 13 European markets. The collaboration creates a joint venture for the bank’s core‑banking infrastructure; Accenture will acquire IBM’s majority share in the venture, while IBM will continue to supply mainframe, cloud, data and AI services and consulting. The partnership aims to accelerate digital transformation, improve efficiency and standardise operations throughout UniCredit’s network. Following the announcement, IBM’s shares rose modestly.
