Unification Minister Chung Dong-young proposes dialogue with North Korea

South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young has proposed direct dialogue with North Korea to address the root causes of a recent landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Returning early from a European trip due to escalating tensions, Chung identified discrepancies in how the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) is measured by South Korea, North Korea, and the United Nations Command as a critical factor that could lead to recurring accidents.

Chung emphasized that a ‘strong against strong’ confrontation would not resolve the issue and urged both sides to meet to reconfirm and measure the boundary line. While he noted that demanding an apology from North Korea is a natural step following the final investigation, he strongly criticized calls to resume loudspeaker broadcasts toward the North, labeling such actions as ‘irresponsible and extremely dangerous.’

Addressing concerns that the incident might undermine the current administration's peace policies, Chung argued that the accident makes the pursuit of peace coexistence even more urgent. He called for a thorough investigation and urged political leaders to seek fundamental solutions rather than engaging in political disputes.
