UNIFIT celebrates 20 years of integrated physiotherapy and fitness

UNIFIT, a facility of the Central Physiotherapy department at the University Medical Center Freiburg, is celebrating 20 years of operation. Originally established in 2006 as a training program exclusively for hospital employees, it has expanded into a fitness and movement center for the general public, currently serving approximately 500 members.

The facility integrates outpatient physiotherapy with health-oriented training, offering individual device training, weekly fitness classes, and prescription-based physiotherapy treatments. It specializes in supporting individuals recovering from orthopedic issues, such as knee operations or ligament tears, as well as those seeking to maintain general health through professional guidance.

In the broader context of joint health, medical experts emphasize that targeted movement is essential for managing conditions like knee osteoarthritis. Research indicates that controlled strength training—such as squats, step-ups, and heel raises—can be more effective for pain relief and functional mobility than pure endurance training. Experts suggest that moderate loading is permissible during exercise, provided pain levels remain manageable and return to baseline within a day.
