Unifor begins contract negotiations with General Motors

The labor union Unifor is beginning contract negotiations with General Motors following a recent agreement with Ford. Unifor is employing a pattern bargaining strategy, aiming to use the terms established in its new three-year deal with Ford as a template for upcoming talks with GM and Stellantis.

The recent Ford agreement included annual pay increases of three per cent, a no-closure agreement, and specific program commitments for various facilities. Unifor National President Lana Payne stated that the Ford deal set a precedent for wage increases and job security.

As negotiations with GM commence, industry experts have expressed skepticism regarding whether automakers will fulfill long-term production investment commitments. While Unifor seeks guarantees to reopen mothballed plants, such as the CAMI facility in Ingersoll, some analysts warn that aggressive bargaining could lead to pushback from manufacturers regarding future plant operations.
