Italian government approves newspaper subsidies for over 1,000 schools

The Department for Information and Publishing, acting on Article 1, paragraph 320 of Law No 213/2023 (2024 budget), approved a public contribution for schools to subscribe to newspapers, periodicals and specialised publications for the 2025‑2026 academic year. The measure covers roughly 1,040‑1,041 state and paritetic schools across Italy and reimburses up to 90 % of the cost, including both print and digital formats.

Deputy Minister for Information and Publishing Alberto Barachini announced the programme, stating: “Helping young students to know information through reading newspapers and periodicals is a decisive contribution to the formation of their awareness, civic sense and democratic participation.” Lists of eligible institutions were published in late July, with the actual disbursement to be carried out through subsequent decrees.

The initiative aims to strengthen media literacy among students and support the newspaper industry by providing substantial public funding for educational subscriptions.
