Argentina industry faces production drop and high fiscal pressure

Argentina's industrial sector is facing a severe contraction, with official data from INDEC showing that industrial production fell 4.9% year-on-year in July. The utilization of installed capacity dropped to 58%, meaning approximately 42% of factory machinery remains idle. Only the oil refining and basic metal industries reported growth in capacity utilization.

The Unión Industrial Argentina (UIA) has expressed deep concern regarding the lack of economic recovery, rising operational costs, and high fiscal pressure, which it claims has reached a record 56%. The UIA has submitted technical proposals to the government to alleviate these pressures, including the suspension of tax seizures and reductions in financing rates for SMEs.

Regional industrial unions in Corrientes, Tucumán, and Chaco have also reported significant difficulties. Challenges include high energy costs, declining domestic consumption, and intense competition from imports. Specifically, the textile sector is struggling as imported products now account for approximately 70% of the market.

In the financial sector, family credit delinquency rose to 18% in July, marking its 21st consecutive monthly increase. Meanwhile, macroeconomic data for the first quarter of 2026 showed an unemployment rate of 7.8%.
