Alejandro Grimaldo joins Atlético Madrid from Bayer Leverkusen

Spanish left‑back Alejandro Grimaldo has completed a transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Atlético Madrid. The club announced a contract running until 30 June 2030, with the fee reported at €20‑25 million. Grimaldo, 30, said his "dream was to return to Spain" and thanked Bayer for his three successful seasons, during which he made 145 appearances, scored 30 goals and provided 45 assists, and helped the German side win the Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2024.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes praised Grimaldo’s impact, noting his “iconic” free‑kicks and saying the club owes him thanks for his contributions. Atlético described him as a versatile left‑back capable of playing as a wing‑back, central midfielder or attacking midfielder, highlighting his technique and vision. The signing makes Grimaldo the first major acquisition for Atlético’s 2026‑27 campaign and adds a regular member of Spain’s World Cup squad to the team’s defensive options.
