Union Brasil party turmoil in Mato Grosso before July 30 convention

Ahead of the União Brasil (UB) party convention scheduled for 30 July in Mato Grosso, the party is engulfed in internal conflict. State deputy Júlio Campos accused convention participants of receiving "indecorous proposals" such as money, jobs and contracts from interested businessmen, and said he would refer the matter to the Electoral Public Ministry if substantiated.

The dispute pits two factions: one led by Senator Jayme Campos, who backs a UB‑run candidacy for the state governorship, and another aligned with Governor Otaviano Pivetta and former governor Mauro Mendes, who favor an alliance with the Republicanos party and reject a UB‑alone candidate. The tension follows months of rivalry within the party and threatens to shape the upcoming electoral alliances and candidate selections for the 2024 state election.

The controversy also coincides with broader party conventions across Mato Grosso, where other parties will finalize alliances and candidacies by early August.
