Union City honors salsa legend José Alberto ‘El Canario’

The city of Union City, New Jersey, has honored Dominican salsa legend José Alberto ‘El Canario’ by naming a street in his honor. The designation, ‘José Alberto El Canario Way,’ was established on 48th Street between Hudson and Palisade Avenues to recognize his 50-year career and contributions to Latin music.

The ceremony was attended by Mayor Brian P. Stack, Commissioner Lucio Fernández, and prominent salsa artists including Gilberto Santa Rosa and Tito Nieves. During the event, the artist expressed deep gratitude to the city and its community, noting the significant role Union City has played in his professional journey.

Born in Santo Domingo, José Alberto began his career with Típica 73 in 1977 before becoming a solo artist. His career includes Latin Grammy awards, gold and platinum records, and collaborations with icons such as Celia Cruz.
