Union City to name street after salsa artist José Alberto ‘El Canario’
Union City, New Jersey, will honor Dominican salsa artist José Alberto ‘El Canario’ by naming a major thoroughfare ‘José Alberto El Canario Way’. The street, located on 48th Street between Hudson and Palisade Avenues, is scheduled to be inaugurated on Friday, September 25.
Union City Commissioner Lucio Fernández announced the initiative, which recognizes the artist’s 50-year musical career. The tribute highlights the artist’s personal ties to the area, as his mother, Adalgisa Andújar, resides in Union City.
The recognition coincides with ‘El Canario’s’ international 50th-anniversary tour. The singer, whose career includes collaborations with Celia Cruz and appearances in films such as ‘The Mambo Kings’, has performed across five continents. Upcoming tour dates include a concert in Pembroke Pines, Florida, on October 24.
