Union County rescinds burn ban, returns to regulated fire season

The Union County Board of Commissioners has voted unanimously to rescind the countywide burn ban, transitioning back to a Regulated Use Fire Season effective immediately. This decision follows recommendations from the Union County Fire Defense Board, citing improved fire conditions due to cooler temperatures, increased precipitation, and better humidity recovery during evenings and mornings.

Under the regulated season, certain outdoor activities are permitted provided they adhere to Union County Ordinance 2024-02. Burn barrels are allowed only between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and must be placed in cleared areas with a 10-foot radius free of flammable material, at least 25 feet from any structure. They must also be equipped with a heavy metal screen and attended at all times with water and a shovel nearby.

Recreational fires are permitted in approved fire rings less than six feet in diameter, provided they are constantly attended until fully extinguished. Burning remains prohibited on windy days. The Fire Defense Board has also recommended extending the regulated use season through October 15, 2026. Residents in areas under dual protection from the Oregon Department of Forestry must also comply with ODF restrictions.
