Montenegro advances EU accession goals and economic growth
Montenegro is advancing its European Union integration and economic stability. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed confidence in Montenegro becoming the 28th EU member by 2028, praising the country's progress in rule of law reforms. Prime Minister Milojko Spajić stated that the government is focused on closing remaining negotiation chapters by the end of 2026.
Economically, Montenegro reported a rise in budget revenues, exceeding 2 billion euros in the first eight months of the year, a 9% increase compared to the previous period. This growth is attributed to stable tax collections, including personal income tax and VAT. Additionally, capital expenditures saw a significant increase of over 50%.
Domestic economic discussions are currently centered on the implementation of the 'Euro model' for minimum wage increases. While the government views the model as a stimulus for the economy, the Union of Employers has requested a gradual implementation to allow businesses to adapt to rising costs and productivity requirements. Meanwhile, trade data shows electricity remains a primary export, while food exports have seen a notable increase of over 20%.
