Greek Shipowners back Panama-Liberia proposal for maritime decarbonization

Melina Travlos, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, has expressed support for a decarbonization proposal submitted by Panama and Liberia ahead of upcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) negotiations in London.

Travlos criticized the existing IMO Net-Zero Framework, stating it contains significant weaknesses and is not a viable solution. In contrast, she described the Panama-Liberia proposal as a ‘balanced and pragmatic foundation’ because it accounts for the availability, affordability, and scalability of alternative fuels, as well as the importance of ship energy efficiency.

The Greek shipping industry emphasizes that any green transition must be realistic and aligned with technological capabilities and global market conditions to avoid placing undue economic burdens on societies without achieving environmental benefits. The IMO working group meeting is scheduled to take place from September 1 to 4.
